Turning sod and making hay are what it's all about at the Saskatchewan Working Teamster Association annual demonstration in Bjorkdale.
The annual Saskatchewan Working Teamsters Association field day is as good as it gets for those who love working horses. It is held at Niall and Susan Campbell’s farm at Bjorkdale. “My dad plowed all our land by horse,” says Niall. “About ten years ago we got together and plowed some sheep pasture with three horses and a sulky. Maybe 30 or 35 people came to see it.”
Some initial instruction through the Western Development Museum evolved into the SWTA’s 100-member status today.
“A lot of people have teams but they don’t do much with them,” says Niall. “Keeping the draft horse breed and the knowledge alive is important.”
The association benefits by having a membership that remembers how horses were used. The trick is taking this knowledge and passing it on to a younger crowd.
