Skin cleansers and moisturizers from Earthwear are made in small batches by owner Tammy Bessant. Ingredient labels include simple, pure Saskatchewan oils and fragrances.
I like to be the person who nudges another person along on their next step,” says Tammy Bessant. “Everyone is at a different stage in their life and I have no idea what that might be when I first talk to them.”
Bessant is neither a counsellor nor a health professional but she does find herself engaging in conversation with people about some very significant issues. And it starts with simple, gently presented questions about what they normally put on their skin.
“Everything you put on your skin is absorbed into your body,” she says. As creator of EarthWear Face & Body products, this is a subject of passion for her. “You can’t control your environment or your genes, but you can choose what you put on your skin. Most conventional skin care is full of chemicals.”
Bessant brings this simple but challenging message with a great deal of gentleness. Creating and marketing her small batches of moisturizers, deodorants, and lotions—made with local Saskatchewan ingredients in her kitchen—has meant drawing attention to the number of times that the term “natural” is misused in the cosmetic industry. And she tends to carry this out one person at a time. “A lot more people than I first thought are interested in what I’m doing with EarthWear.”
What she is doing is showing how simple skin care can be. “Many people don’t trust the idea that you can take care of your skin with a natural oil or wash. I was convinced that I needed a gritty, sand-like wash to clean my face. It’s very liberating to find that you don’t need that.”
To prove her point, Bessant demonstrates how to take common household ingredients such as apple cider vinegar, high quality vegetable oil, and honey and use them as they are for healthy skin maintenance. She plainly makes the point that long ingredient lists on cosmetic bottles do not prove effectiveness. In fact says Bessant, many 'natural' products contain harsh chemicals meant better for cleaning your garage floor than your face.
