Paint Nites in Regina are exploding in popularity.
Date nights had dwindled. After two-and-a-half years of dating, the excitement of going out had all but disappeared for couple Christine Morrow, 21 and Justin Blackmore, 23.
“I wanted more dates,” said Christine, a Regina waitress.
Her boyfriend Justin knew just what to do.
Blackmore called up Morrow’s best friend and arranged a double date at Beer Bros. Gastropub in downtown Regina. But this would not be any ordinary night out—this would be Paint Nite.
Despite the fact that Blackmore had never painted before, he decided to plan something that
would capitalize on his girlfriend’s creativity.
“A friend at work said he did a Paint Nite and it was really fun, so I started planning it as a surprise.”
Half the fun was having Morrow guess where she would be going and what she would be doing.
“My big question was, ‘What do I wear?’” said Morrow. “I wanted to know if I had to dress up or what.”
It didn’t really matter what Morrow wore because it would be covered with an apron—an apron
that could get splattered with paint and covered in colour.
“I was definitely shocked,” said Christine, finding herself sitting at an easel with her boyfriend on one side and her best couple friends on the other.
As the four friends painted their landscapes in the room of 45 fellow novice artists, white wine and acrylic paint flowed, conversation came easily and giggles erupted.
“It’s really thoughtful that he planned this,” says Morrow, a glass of wine in one hand and a paintbrush in the other. “It’s not the usual movie night where you just go out and sit there or go out for dinner. Here we can laugh and enjoy and we’re expressing ourselves in a different way.”
