There can be a lot of thought put into holiday meals. Why not make your table extra special this year with these simple, personalized napkins or tea towels - and finish your table off with this inexpensive table runner!
I like to have something special on the table at gatherings. Being special doesn't mean it has to be expensive. Perhaps its a table centerpiece, some place cards, a table runner or personalized napkins! Using inexpensive materials for items such as the table runner means that you won't panic if someone spills the red wine on it - you can make a new one!
Personalized Napkins, Tea Towels and Table Runners
What you need:
2-3 new tea towels (I purchased mine from the dollar store!)
Small scraps of fabric to cut shapes out of
a sewing machine or fabric glue
thread in different colours to match or contrast your fabric colours
fabric paint and a paint brush
one meter or burlap fabric that is cut to 4 feet wide
How to for the napkins and tea towels:
Cut out a shape from a piece of paper as a pattern. It can be a Christmas tree, a reindeer (see the photo slideshow), a star, a snowflake - you choose your theme! Cut out a shape from the scraps of fabric. Use pins to secure the fabric shape on one of your napkins or tea towels. I placed mine in an area that was free of other patterns so it could stand out on its own near the bottom.
Using a sewing machine, use varying settings to get an effect that you desire. Use a zig-zag pattern and sew in the middle, use a simple stitch around the edges, use a zig-zag around the edges, use different kinds of thread, get creative! If you are making personalized napkins, put a different fabric shape on each napkin. If you are using fabric glue, be careful not to put too much under the shape that it spills over the edges.
Other ideas: Fold one of the tea towels along the longest edge until only the pattern or text is showing that you've added. Wrap the tea towel around a bottle of your favourite (or the host's favourite!) wine and tie with a piece of string. A great gift for potlucks, dinner parties, and to give to your host at your Christmas (or New Year's!) gathering.
How to for the burlap runner:
I actually am transferring this idea over from my wedding! We used these table runners to decorate for our rustic-themed wedding and after the wedding we threw them away. They are low-cost and quick to make, and you can personalize them just for you!
You can purchase the fabric at your local fabric store - it is fairly inexpensive. Trim a length and width according to the type of table you have. You may need more than one meter long if you have a large seating table.
Cut out a stencil of your favorite text: your favorite winter quote, an image, etc. I used the text 'Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow' and finished off with my reindeer I used on my napkins and tea towels. After you cut out the inside of your text (I printed mine from my computer onto cardstock paper), place the stencil where you would like your text to appear.
Make sure you have some type of material (cardboard) underneath the burlap fabric as the fabric paint will seep through the holes. Then, taking fabric paint and your paintbrush, fill in the stencil with the colour of your choice.
Let the paint dry and voila! A personalized table runner, tea towels and napkins that will grace your table this holiday season!
